A female corrections officer in South Carolina, Matrese Grant, has been fired and arrested after allegedly bringing home-cooked meals into the W. Glenn Campbell Detention Center for inmates.
Grant, who worked as a sergeant and shift supervisor at the Darlington County detention facility, had reportedly been employed there for only four months. Authorities said she was found bringing unauthorized food into the facility on September 7 and allegedly hid the meals beneath a blanket to avoid security cameras.
She is also accused of placing the food in a secure location where inmates could later retrieve it. The incident was reported to the Darlington County Sheriff’s Office on September 9, after which Grant was suspended without pay on September 11.
Grant was dismissed following an investigation and arrested on September 17. She was charged with misconduct in office and furnishing contraband to inmates.
The sheriff’s office said unauthorized food is considered contraband because we@pons or other d@ngerous materials could potentially be concealed inside food. However, authorities have not accused Grant of putting any we@pon or h@rmful object in the meals.
After her arrest, Grant was booked into the same detention centre where she had worked and supervised inmates. She was later granted a $15,000 cash or surety bond covering both charges.
The allegations against Grant have not been tested in court.
