The Abia State Police Command has arrested four people and rescued a four-day-old baby and her mentally challenged mother in connection with alleged conspiracy, child ste@ling and tr@fficking.
The suspects were identified as Gladys Nathaniel, 48, Victor Udochukwu, 47, Chijioke Obunwa, 59, and Onyeonoro Chinwe, 43.
According to the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Maureen Chinaka, operatives of the Violent Crimes Response Unit (VCRU) and Rapid Response Unit (RRU), Obehie, arrested the suspects on September 16, 2026, following credible and actionable intelligence.
Chinaka said the suspects allegedly conspired to ste@l the four-day-old baby from her mentally unstable mother and subsequently sold the infant to another person. She said the suspects were apprehended after a diligent police investigation.
“The baby and mother were rescued. The mother has been released to her family for proper care and medical attention, while the infant has been handed over to the Ministry of Women Affairs for protective custody,” Chinaka said.
The police spokesperson confirmed that the suspects are currently in police custody, while investigation continues at the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID).
She added that the suspects would be charged to court after the conclusion of the investigation.
