A pupil of UNIZIK Primary School, Awka, identified as Success Ezenwafor, has reportedly been swept away by floodwaters while travelling to school in a shuttle bus along the Awka-Nibo-Nise-Enugwu-Ukwu Ring Road in Anambra State.
The incident occurred today, September 22, after hours of heavy rainfall across Awka, the state capital, triggered flash floods in several areas, leaving motorists, pedestrians and residents stranded.
A video from the scene showed a school bus trapped in the floodwaters, while some schoolchildren were seen climbing onto the roof of another bus in an apparent attempt to escape the rising water.
Following a distress call, officials of the Anambra State Fire Service, State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) and National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Enugu Operations Office, mobilised to the area.
Six trapped pupils and the shuttle driver have so far been rescued and taken to a hospital for medical attention and observation. However, Success was reportedly swept away by the floodwaters, and the search for him is ongoing.
His parents have appealed to members of the public for help in locating him. Anyone with useful information has been urged to contact the nearest police station or relevant emergency authorities.
Emergency agencies are continuing to monitor the situation and respond to emerging incidents, while residents in flood-prone areas have been advised to remain vigilant and avoid driving or walking through moving floodwaters.
