Canada Is One of the Worst Countries to Deal With — Trump Says as He Escalates Trade War, Accuses Ottawa of Hitting U.S. Farmers With 400% Tariffs

U.S. President Donald Trump has intensified his criticism of Canada, calling it “one of the worst countries in the entire world” to deal with as trade tensions between the two allies continue to rise.

Speaking to reporters in the Oval Office on Monday, Trump accused Canada of treating the United States “very unfairly,” particularly over tariffs on American agricultural products. He said Canadian leaders “feel entitled” and claimed they charge U.S. farmers tariffs of “400% and more.”

“They want to have a deal with us,” Trump said. “They call us all the time. The problem is, they have treated the United States very unfairly. They have been one of the worst countries in the entire world.”

Trump’s comments come after he imposed 50% tariffs on about $28 billion worth of Canadian goods last month. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney responded with a “dollar for dollar” approach.

Trump was likely referring to Canada’s dairy tariff system, where imports exceeding agreed quotas can face duties of more than 200%. However, those higher tariffs apply only to shipments above the quota.

The Canadian Dairy Commission says U.S. dairy products have remained within the access levels agreed under the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) and, therefore, have not faced the higher tariffs.

Trump also argued that Canada depends heavily on the U.S. economy while giving little in return. He cited American support, including military cooperation and icebreakers, and said the U.S. does not need Canadian resources, claiming, “there’s nothing they have that we need.”

Despite the criticism, Trump said he expects a deal, joking that “Lake Ontario is now Lake America” and predicting Canada would eventually come forward to apologize.

“I think a deal will be made, but it’s got to be a fair deal,” he said.
