NDC chieftain Babachir Lawal has revealed that he personally sat down with Rabiu Kwankwaso and Peter Obi to discuss their plans and ideas for transforming Nigeria.
Speaking on Arise News, Lawal said he initially wondered what both politicians were telling Nigerians at their gatherings.
“Kwankwaso just gathers millions of red caps. They dance, sing, and he waves his hands. I don’t hear anything. Peter Obi does the same thing. He goes to a church funeral and waits until the church is full, and then he walks in and disrupts everything, and even the priest will be shouting ‘Obi, Obi’. Only the corpse will still be quiet.”
Lawal said he later sat down with them and discussed practical solutions. He challenged Kwankwaso, whom he described as a water engineer, to prioritise the rehabilitation of silted dams and canals in northern Nigeria and restore dry-season farming.
“When we were young, people harvest twice a year, irrigation. Canals were all over Kano State. Now the dams have silted,” he said, adding that “our people need irrigation farming since rainfall is disappointing us.”
He also discussed oil exploration in Bauchi, claiming the oil well has “about one billion barrels of oil underground,” which could support a refinery in Bauchi or Gombe.
On the Mambilla hydroelectric project, Lawal said it could generate “three gigawatts of electricity” and provide “20,000 hectares of irrigable land.”
He argued that development should go beyond fuel subsidy removal, saying: “How do you remove subsidy on fuel? There are better ways of removing subsidy on fuel.”
“They are ticking all the boxes. They want to do it,” Lawal said.
