Tinubu Saved Nigeria’s Economy From Collapse — VP Kashim Shettima
Vice President Kashim Shettima has said President Bola Tinubu saved Nigeria’s economy from collapsing, defending the administration’s economic reforms amid criticism over the hardship facing Nigerians.
Speaking during a Western Times interview on October 3, Shettima said the economy was “teetering on the brink of collapse” when the Tinubu administration assumed office, adding that “he saved our economy.”
He acknowledged the hardship caused by the reforms but said the government was rolling out measures to cushion their impact.
“Tough times do not last forever. Tough people do,” Shettima said, highlighting planned e-mobility initiatives, including 10,600 electric tricycles for the North-East and 300 buses and taxis.
He also described NELFUND as “a master stroke” aimed at helping students from low-income families access education.
Shettima said Nigeria’s foreign reserves stood at just $3.9 billion when the administration took over, which he claimed was not enough to import fuel for one month.
He credited Tinubu’s removal of the fuel subsidy and realignment of multiple exchange rates as “far-reaching decisions,” saying the President had the courage to take difficult steps despite the immediate hardship.
