I will rather be childless than have one that will use my death to play politics – Nyesom Wike blasts Rotimi Amaechi for his comment about his late mum

Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has criticised former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi for allegedly bringing his late mother, Mary Amaechi, into political arguments.

Wike spoke on Saturday, October 3, at the Uzugbani Ekpeye National Executive Council meeting in Ahoada, Rivers State, less than 24 hours after Amaechi appeared on Channels TV’s Politics.

Amaechi, the ADC vice-presidential candidate for the 2027 election, had reportedly linked his mother’s health challenges to President Bola Tinubu’s policies, saying it became difficult for him to afford her medication after 2023.

Reacting, Wike said he was pained to see Amaechi use his late mother in politics.

“You know it is unfortunate… that we must respect our parents but anybody who watched television last night will cry where somebody is bringing his own mother to play politics. Your mother that we thought should be resting peacefully,” Wike said.

He also referred to Amaechi’s reported statement that his mother would be happy if ADC wins the 2027 election.

“In one of the videos, he said if ADC wins the election, his mother will be very happy. So, the only condition is that his mother will not be happy if ADC does not win. Too bad! She will not be happy if ADC doesn’t win.”

Wike questioned how Amaechi, who served as Speaker from 1999 to 2007, governor from 2007 to 2015 and minister from 2015 to 2023, could say he could not afford drugs for his mother.

“This was a speaker for eight years… this was a governor for eight years… this was a minister for eight years… and your mother was sick and you are telling the whole world that because of the policy you couldn’t buy drug for your mother,” he said.

Wike further condemned what he described as the use of a family tragedy for political purposes, saying he would rather not have a child who would treat his death that way.

Instead of me to have such a child, may I be childless” he said

He also declared: “But ADC will not win. No way!”
