The Convener of the Northern League of Democrats, Umar Ardo, has described the emerging campaign landscape ahead of the 2027 general elections as one-sided, accusing opposition parties of failing to take their campaigns to the grassroots.
Ardo made the remarks on Thursday during an interview on Arise Television’s ‘Prime Time’, where he assessed the activities of political parties ahead of the elections.
According to him, the All Progressives Congress (APC) currently appears to be the only major party actively visible on the ground, particularly in Abuja and several states.
He argued that while other political contenders remain active online, much of their engagement consists of responding to the APC rather than presenting their own agenda to voters.
“There is a one-sided political campaign. If you drive around Abuja and other states, it is only APC you will see. Other political contenders, you will see them on social media almost always reacting rather than acting and defining the election,” Ardo said.
He said the situation could create the impression that the electoral contest is being conducted on an uneven playing field.
Ardo consequently urged opposition parties to move beyond social media and intensify their physical engagement with Nigerians, insisting that they should take the initiative by articulating their own programmes and campaign messages instead of constantly responding to the ruling party.
