Anambra Government Counters Peter Obi, Claims State Inherited N127bn and $124m in Debt

The Anambra State Government has accused former Governor Peter Obi of leaving behind eight external loans with an outstanding balance of ₦127.4 billion as of June 30, 2026.

The Commissioner for Information and Value Reorientation, Law Mefor, made the claim in a statement responding to Obi’s assertion that he left the state without unpaid loans, salaries, pensions, gratuities or contractor liabilities.

According to Mefor, the loans, valued at $123.77 million when contracted, were obtained for projects including malaria control, erosion management, education and healthcare. He said the current administration still spends hundreds of millions of naira monthly servicing them.

The government also alleged that Obi left unpaid salary, pension and gratuity obligations involving retired teachers and former Water Corporation workers. It said the current administration had cleared about ₦22 billion in inherited gratuity arrears but that some legacy liabilities remained.

Mefor also disputed Obi’s claim that ₦2.13 billion in ecological funds was left in a First Bank account at UNIZIK, Awka. He said the account was an Internally Generated Revenue–Consolidated Revenue Account and that records showed no such amount entered or remained in it.

Obi had described the government’s claims as false, saying his administration cleared over ₦35 billion in historical gratuities and arrears and left office without outstanding salaries, pensions, gratuities or contractor debts. He also said the ecological fund was left untouched for the Oko/Umuchiana erosion crisis and challenged the government to provide proof otherwise, vowing to stop his 2027 presidential campaign if such evidence was produced.

Obi’s media aide, Idris Zekeri Jnr, said former officials of Obi’s administration were preparing a detailed response to the state government’s claims.
