Nigerian singer Peter Okoye, popularly known as Mr P of the defunct music duo PSquare, has opened up about why celebrating his birthday on November 18 has not always been a joyful experience for him.
Speaking on the Capital XTRA Podcast, Mr P explained that the date has become a day when people closely watch what he and his twin brother, Paul Okoye, will post or say, rather than simply celebrating their individual birthdays.
He said, “November 18th, for the past 13 years, hasn’t been a birthday that everyone can wish for themselves. November 18th is always gonna be like a moment where everybody’s looking out to see what you’re gonna post, what they’re gonna say.”
Mr P also explained that the situation is complicated by the fact that his brother is his neighbour, meaning people often visit Paul’s side and engage in gossip. He said some people also do not want to feel neglected by visiting one twin without visiting the other.
“My brother is my neighbor, like I said, and people go to his side. They do a lot of gossip, and they don’t want to feel neglected,” he said.
According to him, he wants a separate birthday celebration because the matter has become personal. “So this one is separate. I think it’s personal to me. So if you ask me, I just say, like, let me just have my separate birthday.”
Mr P added that he has even considered changing his birth date on his official documents, including his passport, although he acknowledged that the process would take time.
“I wish I can change that on my documentation, the passport, but I know it’s gonna take a lot of time. But because maybe in the near future I might do it.”
Reflecting on the past, he concluded: “November 18th has been not a birthday. It has been a bad day for me for the last 16, 17 years.”
