Archbishop Emeritus of Abuja, John Cardinal Onaiyekan, has said the Ndigbo should be allowed to freely decide who they want to vote for in the 2027 elections, following remarks by Anambra State Governor Chukwuma Soludo advising the people against wasting their votes.
Speaking during an interview, Onaiyekan was asked about Soludo’s comments and his advice to the Ndigbo, particularly on how they should use their votes in 2027.
Responding, the Cardinal said he did not know exactly what Soludo had told the Ndigbo but maintained that they should be free to make their own decisions at the polls.
“I don’t know what Soludo has told the Ndigbo. All I can say is that the Ndigbo should be allowed to freely choose who should be their president and governors,” he said.
Onaiyekan further stated that governors should not be the ones directing people on how to vote, noting that elected officials would also have the opportunity to cast their own ballots.
“It’s not the duty of governor to teach, to tell people how they should vote. The governors will have their own votes now. Every governor will be able to vote. Will vote for himself. Let others do,” he added.
He stressed that voting remains an important opportunity for citizens to express their preferences, urging the Ndigbo to make use of that opportunity.
“At least that’s the only opportunity that we have to express our mind. Let us do it,” Onaiyekan said.
