Anambra State Government has commenced moves to prosecute individuals who deny women and girls the right to inherit property because of their gender.
The Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice of Anambra State, Tobe Nweke, SAN, has initiated steps towards the prosecution of persons involved in such practices and directed the Nigerian Police to investigate complaints of denial of inheritance rights and forward the case files to his office for prosecution.
This was disclosed in a letter personally signed by the Attorney General and addressed to the Nigerian Police. The letter was made available to newsmen on Monday, September 26, 2026.
According to the letter, the practice of denying women and girls their right to inherit property simply because they are female amounts to a criminal offence under Section 22 of the Violence Against Persons (Prohibition) Law, 2017 of Anambra State.
The offence is punishable by up to fours years imprisonment.
