Cameroon Suspends Opposition Party for Three Months Over Calls for Rebellion Ahead of 2027 Elections

Authorities in Cameroon have suspended the Cameroon National Salvation Front (FSNC), the opposition party led by Issa Tchiroma Bakary, for three months over allegations of incitement to insurrection and disturbance of public order.

The Minister of Territorial Administration, Paul Atanga Nji, announced the suspension on Tuesday, accusing the party of activities that allegedly occurred before, during and after the October 12, 2025, presidential election.

According to the minister’s statement, the party could face legal action if it refuses to comply with the suspension.

Bakary, a former government minister, emerged as a prominent opposition figure during the election, rallying young people seeking political change against 93-year-old President Paul Biya, who has ruled Cameroon since 1982.

After the election, Biya was declared the winner, but Bakary also claimed victory and repeatedly urged his supporters to defend what he described as his mandate.

His calls triggered protests in major cities across the country. Security forces reportedly responded with a vi%lent crackdown that resulted in several deaths, although the government has not released an official d+ath toll.

Bakary subsequently went into exile in The Gambia.

The three-month suspension affects a party that currently has two members of parliament and comes ahead of Cameroon’s local and parliamentary elections, scheduled for early 2027 following multiple postponements.

The development raises fresh concerns over political opposition and the environment ahead of the country’s next electoral cycle.
