President Donald Trump says affluent foreigners are exploiting America’s birthright citizenship policy to secure U.S. citizenship for their relatives through children born on American soil.

In an interview with Politico’s Dasha Burns, he expressed hope that the Supreme Court (SCOTUS) will overturn the policy, which grants citizenship to U.S.-born children of illegal aliens and other foreign nationals with “no ties to the U.S.”

“The case is very interesting because that case was meant for the babies of sl+ves and if you look at the dates on the case, it was exactly having to do with the Civil War,” Trump said, arguing that the original intent of birthright citizenship has been distorted.

“That case was not meant from some rich person coming from another country, dropping, putting a foot in our country, and all of a sudden their whole family becomes, you know, United States citizens.”

He stressed that the ruling “is all about sl+ves, the babies of sl+ves,” adding, “I think the court understands it, too. That would be a devastating decision if we lose that case.”

Trump warned that the U.S. “cannot afford to house tens of millions of people that came in through birthright citizenship.”

Lawmakers have also raised concerns. Rep. Tom Tiffany (R-WI) highlighted a rise in wealthy Chinese nationals giving birth in the Northern Mariana Islands to obtain U.S. citizenship for their children.

“Since 2009, Communist Chinese passport holders have been permitted to sidestep the U.S visa requirements, through categorical parole,” he said during a House Judiciary Committee hearing.

“There are more children being born via birth tourism on the Northern Mariana Islands right now than there are domestic children being born. They don’t even have to have a visa to come in here,” Tiffany noted.
