The deepening political turmoil in Rivers State has continued to attract sharp scrutiny, with analysts questioning not just the balance of power but the political judgment of key actors involved. As efforts at reconciliation struggle to gain traction, attention is turning to the strategic choices that triggered the confrontation in the first place.
Political analyst Mahmud Jega offered this assessment during an interview on ARISE News on Wednesday, February 4, 2026, where he dissected Governor Siminalayi Fubara’s approach to the escalating conflict with his predecessor, Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike.

According to Jega, the Rivers governor entered the battle without sufficient political calculation or appreciation of the forces aligned against him.
“He is not a very clever political operator. Before you pick a fight with a man like Wike, you should have assessed,” Jega said.
Jega argued that high-stakes political confrontations demand careful planning, broad alliances, and a clear reading of power dynamics. In his view, Fubara underestimated Wike’s extensive political reach and experience, particularly his influence within party structures and the federal establishment.

The analyst noted that this misjudgment left the governor vulnerable to sustained pressure, including impeachment threats and institutional pushback, which have since defined the Rivers political crisis.
He added that the episode highlights a recurring lesson in Nigerian politics: that challenging an entrenched political heavyweight without adequate preparation often leads to strategic isolation rather than reform.
