Police in Borno State have freed a sheep and her two lambs arrested for eating up fried fish belonging to a fish seller in Bulabulin neighbourhood, Maiduguri, the state capital.
According to reports, the arrest was made on Saturday, November 6, 2022, following a complaint lodged by a trader identified as Yusuf Ibrahim, who sells fish in the neighbourhood.
The aggrieved trader, who demanded justice, complained that the sheep in question had terr%rized him for years by playing a game of hide and seek with him and his stock. According to him, the sheep would wait for him to be distracted and then quickly grab a mouthful of the fish until he or the bystanders would realise and chase it away.
He said he endured the sheep’s unruly behaviour for five years and had severally asked the owner to take action by tying and feeding the sheep all to no avail, but had the final straw on Saturday as the action caused him huge financial losses. It was, however, after the sheep raided his fish on Saturday that he finally decided to involve the police who arrested the sheep and detained it overnight.
Luba Mohammed, owner of the sheep, said she was confused when the sheep developed a liking for fried fish and appealed for its release. The suspects were released on Sunday by the Bulabulin Divisional Police Headquarters after Ibrahim reached a settlement with its owner.
However, Honorable Hussaini Monguno who is member of the Board of the Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA), appeared to have been impressed by the magnanimity of the fish seller and rewarded him with N50,000.
Hussaini Monguno said that the big heart exhibited by the fish seller and the capacity he exhibited of tolerating the sheep’s endless raids for five years, was impressive and highly magnanimous and thus deserving of his reward.
