The contest for the Imo West (Orlu Zone) senatorial seat is beginning to intensify ahead of the 2027 elections, with key political actors within the All Progressives Congress (APC) positioning themselves for what is shaping up to be a highly competitive race.
According to The Punch, party leaders in Imo State have endorsed Governor Hope Uzodimma as their preferred candidate for the senatorial seat. This endorsement comes even as the current senator representing the district, Osita Izunaso, is believed to be interested in seeking another term.
At a recent meeting of party stakeholders from Orlu Zone, led by the state chairman Austin Onyedebelu, nomination and expression of interest forms were reportedly obtained on behalf of the governor. The group explained that their decision reflects a collective position among political leaders in the zone, who want Uzodimma to represent them at the National Assembly. There are also speculations that the governor may be aiming for a higher legislative role, including the possibility of contesting for Senate President.
While presenting the forms to the governor’s Chief of Staff, Nnamdi Anyaehie, stakeholders urged close associates to encourage Uzodimma to accept the offer and complete the process before the stated deadline. They described the move as a unified initiative funded and supported by leaders across the zone.
Party leadership in the state has also advised other aspirants to step aside in favor of the governor, maintaining that he is the consensus choice. However, the situation remains fluid. Former governor Rochas Okorocha has also obtained nomination forms, indicating his intention to re-enter the race and potentially challenge Uzodimma during the primaries.
With multiple influential figures showing interest, the APC primaries in Imo West are expected to be closely contested, setting the stage for a significant political battle within the party.
