A viral video has sparked outrage in Akwa Ibom State, showing policemen, allegedly from the Itam Police Division, manhandling a pregnant woman over vehicle insurance enforcement.

The footage, shared on Facebook by Mayor Sylvester, captures the distressing moment officers dragged the woman—reportedly an insurance defaulter—until she collapsed.

Condemning the act, Sylvester wrote: “This is what the Itam Police Station in Akwa Ibom State has turned the Third Party Insurance thing into. They are now acting like animals. These are the kind of irresponsible characters recruited into the force.”

Expressing concern for the woman and her unborn child, he added: “Imagine how a pregnant woman is being roughhandled. I just hope her baby is still alive.”

He further suggested that if police must enforce insurance compliance, they should collaborate with insurance companies to provide instant renewal options at checkpoints instead of resorting to brutality.

The incident drew a crowd of onlookers, many of whom questioned the excessive force used against the woman.

Efforts to reach Akwa Ibom State Commissioner of Police, Bala Mohammed Azare, and the Police Public Relations Officer, Tifon John, for comments were unsuccessful at the time of filing this report.
