Ukrainian Forces Capture Nigerian Reportedly F+ghting for Russia
Ukrainian forces have captured Kehinde Oluwagbemileke, a 29-year-old Nigerian national, who was reportedly f+ghting on the side of Russia in the ongoing war in Ukraine.
According to Ukraine’s “I Want to Live” initiative, Oluwagbemileke was apprehended by the Freedom of Russia Legion — a pro-Ukraine unit made up of Russian f+ghters — in the Zaporizhzhia region. He had been serving with Russian forces for about five months before his capture.
Reports say he had been living in Russia for four years before being arrested on dr¥g-related charges. Rather than serve time under Article 228 of the Russian Criminal Code, he allegedly agreed to join the Russian military in exchange for a lighter sentence.
“Kehinde is one of thousands of mercenaries from third countries recruited by Russia’s Defense Ministry to f+ght in Ukraine,” the group said, adding that many foreign f+ghters are often misled and treated as disposable.
The Ukrainian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has once again called on foreign nationals to steer clear of Russia’s military, urging those already enlisted or considering joining to instead reach out to the “I Want to Live” project.
Oluwagbemileke’s arrest adds to the growing number of foreigners captured while fighting for Russia. Earlier this year, two Chinese nationals shared similar accounts of being coerced and misled into joining the conflict.
