The Federal Government has honoured Nigeria’s female basketball team, D’Tigress, with national awards and generous gifts following their historic fifth straight AfroBasket Women’s Championship victory.
Each player received the national honour of the Order of the Niger (OON), a cash reward of $100,000, and a furnished flat. Members of the technical team, led by Coach Rena Wakama, were also awarded $50,000 each.
The announcement was made during a reception held in Abuja on Monday evening, where President Bola Tinubu was represented by First Lady Senator Remi Tinubu and Vice President Kashim Shettima.
This recognition comes just days after the President similarly honoured the Super Falcons for winning Nigeria’s 10th Women’s Africa Cup of Nations title.
D’Tigress claimed their seventh AfroBasket crown on Sunday, defeating Mali 78–64 in a hard-fought final. The win marked their 29th consecutive victory in the tournament, maintaining an unbeaten streak that dates back to 2015.
Despite slow starts in earlier matches, the team showed remarkable resilience and dominance throughout the competition, further cementing their legacy in African women’s basketball.
