US Government Bars Iranian Officials at UN Summit From Shopping in New York

Iranian officials attending the UN summit in New York this week have been barred by the US government from making purchases ranging from bulk household goods to luxury items.

A State Department spokesman, Thomas Pigott, described the move as part of Washington’s “maximum pressure” strategy, saying:
“We will not allow the Iranian regime’s clerical elites to go on a shopping spree in New York while the Iranian people face p%verty, collapsing infrastructure, and shortages of water and electricity.”

According to a notice published in the Federal Register on Tuesday, Iranian diplomats and officials are now restricted from shopping at major outlets such as Costco, Sam’s Club, and BJ’s Wholesale Club.

The notice further stated that Iranian representatives would require special approval from the State Department to buy luxury goods. Items listed include watches, electronics, and fountain pens valued at over $1,000, as well as vehicles priced above $60,000.

The restrictions come as Iran’s economy continues to reel under US sanctions, which have severely affected imports and limited the country’s ability to export oil.

Since taking office earlier this year, President Donald Trump has intensified efforts to weaken Iran’s nuclear program, including ordering strikes on three nuclear sites in June.
