The Federal Government has confirmed that it is currently engaged in diplomatic discussions with the United States government following recent comments by U.S. President Donald Trump hinting at possible military action.
Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, revealed the development during an interview with Sky News. He explained that existing diplomatic channels are already being used to ease tensions and clarify concerns raised by the U.S.
According to Idris, “Channels of communication have been opened. I can confirm that we are talking with them, and I think they are understanding the situation better.
“We believe that most of the information is a result of a lack of a proper understanding of the diversity and complexity of the problem we have at hand,” he said.
The minister also stressed that Nigeria has not lost any territory to Boko Haram, noting that the fight against insurgency does not resemble traditional w+rfare.
Additionally, Idris alleged that certain proscribed separatist groups have been working with U.S.-based lobby organizations to misrepresent Nigeria’s internal security challenges to American authorities.
