Obafemi Awolowo University Governing Board Chair, Prof. Oyeweso, D+es at 64
Eminent history scholar, Professor Siyan Oyeweso, has d+ed at the age of 64.
The professor, who hailed from Ede in Osun State, passed away on Tuesday at an undisclosed hospital in Ibadan. According to family sources, he fell ill in October shortly after returning from an event in Abuja.
His remains were being transported to his hometown, Ede, for burial as of the time of filing this report.
Until his de+th, Oyeweso served as chairman of the Governing Board of Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, and lectured in the Department of History and International Studies at Osun State University, Osogbo.
A respected scholar, his research focused on Higher Education, Nigerian Cultural History, Intellectual History, Yoruba inter-state relations, Islam in Yorubaland, and the Nigerian Civil War.
Born on February 1, 1961, in Ibadan into a Muslim family, Oyeweso attended the University of Ife (now Obafemi Awolowo University), where he earned his Bachelor’s, Master’s, and Doctorate degrees in History.
He began his academic career as an Assistant Lecturer at Lagos State University in 1985, rising to become a professor in 2004. He was a Fellow of the Historical Society of Nigeria and a member of the Nigerian Academy of Letters.
