The Lagos State Police Command has dismissed a viral social media narrative claiming that a police inspector seen being b+aten in a trending video was caught st+aling, explaining that the officer was att+cked while carrying out official duties.
In a statement on Thursday, Police Public Relations Officer SP Abimbola Adebesi described the captions circulating online as “false and misleading,” saying the incident had been grossly misrepresented.
According to the Command, the officer is an inspector attached to the Lagos State Taskforce who was enforcing the state’s ban on illegal parking along Brown Street, Oshodi. Trouble began when he stopped a motorist attempting to park unlawfully, prompting the motorist to turn v+olent.
Amid the confrontation, the inspector accidentally discharged sh+ts into the road, causing debris to inj¥re some passersby. The disturbance attracted a mob that descended on the officer, leaving him severely inj¥red.
The police added that while the inspector is undergoing disciplinary action for unprofessional conduct, 13 suspects captured in the viral video att+cking him have been arrested. They include, Dele Oriade, 39; Adekunle Olalere, 40; Mudashiru Olamilekan, 28; Anayo Achusie, 34; Joshua Enwonyin, 24; Okoro Okechukwu, 26; Rilwan Lateef, 32; Damilare Odebode, 22; Haruna Aleshi, 25; Sodiq Omoniyi, 26; Chukwudi Patience, 25; Godstime Okafor, 26; and Chinedu Divine, 29. They will be prosecuted after investigations.
While condemning the inspector’s conduct, the Lagos Commissioner of Police also warned that att+cking law enforcement officers on duty is a criminal act. The Command urged the public to remain calm, avoid spreading misinformation, and cooperate with security agencies to maintain order in the state.
