MIT Professor G¥nned Down At Home As H%micide Investigation Begins
A professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology has d+ed after being sh%t at his Brookline home on Monday evening.
The victim, identified as Nuno Loureiro, 47, was rushed to a nearby hospital after police responded to a report of a man suffering from an apparent g%nshot wound, according to the Norfolk District Attorney’s Office. He was pronounced d+ad on Tuesday morning.
In a statement, an MIT spokesperson expressed condolences to Loureiro’s family, students, and colleagues, noting that the university is providing support and outreach to members of the community affected by the loss.
Dennis Whyte, an engineering professor and former head of MIT’s Plasma Science and Fusion Center, described Loureiro as a highly respected mentor and leader, admired for his compassion and clarity. MIT President Sally Kornbluth also called his d+ath a “shocking loss” to the institution.
Loureiro served as a professor in the departments of nuclear science and engineering and physics, and was the director of MIT’s Plasma Science and Fusion Center.
Authorities confirmed that h%micide detectives are investigating the sh%%ting.
A Boston University student who lives near Loureiro’s apartment told local media she heard three loud sounds Monday night and believed they were gunshots. She said the incident was unsettling and difficult to comprehend.
On Tuesday afternoon, some of Loureiro’s students visited his apartment building, a three-story brick residence in Brookline, to pay tribute and mourn his d+ath.
