The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Joash O. Amupitan, SAN, has reaffirmed the commission’s commitment to conducting free, fair, and credible elections in 2027, noting that preparations are already underway to strengthen Nigeria’s democratic process.
Amupitan made the remarks in his 2026 New Year message to INEC staff nationwide, describing the year as a crucial period for institutional consolidation and renewal ahead of the general elections.

Reflecting on 2025, he commended INEC staff for their dedication, particularly in the successful conduct of the Anambra State governorship election held shortly after he assumed office on October 23.
According to him, the exercise demonstrated the commission’s capacity to safeguard the integrity of the ballot through discipline, unity, and professionalism.
Looking ahead, the INEC chairman highlighted upcoming electoral activities, including the FCT Area Council elections in February and off-cycle governorship polls in Ekiti and Osun states.

He reiterated INEC’s resolve to deliver free, fair, credible, transparent, and inclusive elections at all levels, including the 2027 general elections.
Amupitan also pledged to prioritize staff welfare, stressing his commitment to fostering a workplace built on equity, discipline, and mutual respect.
He encouraged personnel to uphold the integrity of the electoral system, noting that their collective efforts are vital to building public trust and ensuring that every eligible voter is empowered and every vote counts.

He expressed optimism that 2026 would be a year of significant progress for the commission and wished INEC staff and their families a prosperous New Year.
