Former Minister of Foreign Affairs, Bolaji Akinyemi, has shared his reflections on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s recent state visit to the United Kingdom, highlighting how symbolic moments during the trip helped shape public perception of Nigeria’s leadership.

Speaking in an interview aired by Arise News, Akinyemi noted that beyond official meetings and diplomatic engagements, certain gestures by the president carried deeper meaning, both at home and internationally.

He recalled a particular moment in Windsor that caught his attention and stirred anxiety. “My heart was in my mouth when I saw the president in Windsor city and he had to climb the steps,” Akinyemi said, describing his initial reaction as he watched the scene unfold.

According to the former minister, the moment stood out because of its symbolic weight. He explained that while it may have appeared routine, such instances are closely observed and can influence perceptions about a leader’s physical strength, composure, and overall capacity to govern.

Akinyemi added that his concerns were quickly eased when the president climbed the steps confidently, projecting what he described as resilience and steadiness. In his view, the successful execution of such a simple act sent a reassuring message about continuity in leadership.

He emphasized that state visits often go beyond formal diplomacy, involving a layer of visual communication that can shape how leaders are perceived by foreign governments, investors, and citizens. According to him, optics play a crucial role in reinforcing confidence, especially during periods of heightened global uncertainty.

“State visits are not only about agreements and discussions,” Akinyemi noted. “They are also about perception and reassurance.”

The former minister further argued that President Tinubu’s visit contributed to strengthening Nigeria’s image on the global stage. By engaging with key stakeholders in the United Kingdom, he said, the administration was able to reinforce long-standing ties and demonstrate Nigeria’s commitment to international cooperation.
