Okonjo-Iweala’s Brother Accused Of Sending Critics To Jail Amid Land Dispute Allegations

Fresh controversy has emerged surrounding the Obi of Ogwashi-Ukwu Kingdom in Delta State, Ifechukwude Aninshi Okonjo, amid allegations of land grabbing, intimidation of critics, and alleged misuse of security agencies to silence opposition within the community.

The allegations come alongside the ongoing legal case involving activist Victor Ojei, who was arrested and remanded by a Federal High Court in Asaba over alleged cyberstalking and cr+minal defamation linked to social media posts about the monarch.

According to court filings cited in the report, Ojei allegedly made Facebook publications accusing the monarch of illegally selling community land reportedly earmarked for youth agricultural empowerment to a private company. Prosecutors argued that the posts were defamatory and violated provisions of Nigeria’s Cybercrimes Act.

The activist pleaded not guilty, and the court adjourned the matter for hearing of his bail application while ordering his remand in custody.

Community sources, however, allege that the monarch has used influence and security connections to suppress dissent and control land transactions in Ogwashi-Ukwu. These claims include accusations of land acquisition disputes, destruction of farmlands in neighbouring communities, and targeting of critics.

The monarch has also previously faced broader public scrutiny over long-standing land conflicts in surrounding communities, though palace representatives have maintained that certain acquisitions were legally backed by government documentation.

The report also revisits earlier allegations that the monarch and his brother were reportedly linked to theft convictions in the United States in the 1990s.

The situation highlights ongoing tensions in the community, with disputes over land, authority, and the prosecution of activists continuing to fuel public debate around the traditional leadership.
