LAGOS โ Residents of Ayinke Street, Shogunle, in the Oshodi area of Lagos, are counting their losses after a section of the perimeter fence at the Sam Ethnan Air Force Base collapsed during a heavy downpour on Sunday, causing severe flooding across the community.
The collapse, which occurred during a weekend storm, sent floodwaters surging into nearby residential buildings and businesses. The wallโs failure has left the street covered in debris, including bricks, mud, and refuse, while several vehiclesโincluding those belonging to residentsโsustained significant damage.
Residents have pointed to a specific environmental sanitation exercise conducted shortly before the rains as a contributing factor to the disaster. Blocked Drainage: According to witnesses, workers clearing weeds and banana trees around the perimeter fence reportedly left debris that obstructed the drainage openings at the base of the wall. Pressure Build-up: With nowhere for the water to drain, pressure built up behind the perimeter fence until the structure finally gave way, unleashing a torrent of water into the homes of unsuspecting residents.
Voices of the Affected: One resident, identified as Moses, noted that the community had previously been able to handle rainfall without incident. “This has never happened before,” he stated. “Before now, the water would pass through, and within five minutes, you wouldn’t even know it had rained.
The destruction has left many families displaced, with electronics, furniture, and essential household items destroyed. Affected community members are now calling on the Lagos State Government to intervene, provide urgent relief materials, and assist in clearing the massive amount of debris that continues to obstruct the road.
