VIDEO: Nigerian Air Force Ikeja officials visit the scene of a fence collapse that destroyed multiple properties following a heavy downpour. Assessment and safety checks are currently ongoing.

Following heavy rainfall, a section of the perimeter fence at the Sam Ethnan Air Force Base in Ikeja, Lagos, collapsed, leading to widespread property damage in the surrounding Ayinke Street, Shogunle (Oshodi area).

Residents attribute the collapse to a combination of heavy downpours and blocked drainage channels. According to accounts, debris—including weeds and trees cleared during a recent environmental sanitation exercise—reportedly obstructed drainage holes at the base of the fence. This caused water to pool and rise until the wall could no longer withstand the pressure.

Impact on the Community: The collapse, which occurred during a weekend storm, caused floodwaters to rush into homes and businesses. Residents reported severe losses, including:

• Property Damage: Electronics, furniture, and household goods were destroyed.

• Vehicular Damage: Several vehicles were damaged, some with shattered windscreens or pushed into nearby canals by the force of the water.

• Infrastructure: Debris, bricks, and mud from the wall scattered across the street, obstructing movement and requiring residents to clear the area themselves.Residents have publicly voiced their frustrations, citing the incident as a “yearly nightmare” and calling on the Lagos State government to intervene, provide relief for their losses, and ensure better drainage maintenance to prevent future occurrences.
