Panic gripped protesters at Abuja’s Unity Fountain today after human rights activist Omoyele Sowore lost consciousness during a confrontation with the police. The incident unfolded rapidly during a Democracy Day rally, leaving fellow demonstrators scrambling for medical aid as security operatives clamped down on the gathering.
Sowore was said to have collapsed after police operatives moved to disperse protesters gathered to demonstrate against insecurity, economic hardship and poor governance.
The demonstrators were dispersed after security personnel deployed tear gas canisters in an apparent attempt to break up the gathering.
Amid the incident, Sowore has now been reportedly taken to an undisclosed hospital for further examination and treatment.
