Youth k+lled by opposition fans after football match in Bayelsa
A friendly football match between teams from Eniwari and Opuama communities in Southern Ijaw Local Government Area of Bayelsa State turned vi%lent, leading to the d+ath of a young man identified as Thomas Ogbianawei, allegedly k+lled by fans from the opposing Opuama team.
Community sources said tensions began during the match on Saturday, June 13, 2026, after a disagreement broke out between players of both sides.
The misunderstanding reportedly escalated into a physical confrontation on the pitch, although no spectators or match officials were said to have taken part in the clash.
However, the situation worsened after the game when some members of the visiting Opuama team, while returning home, encountered Ogbianawei along the route between Eniwari and Fonibiri communities. He was allegedly att@cked after being identified as an indigene of Eniwari.
He sustained severe injuries and was later confirmed d+ad, sparking mourning in the community and heightening tensions in the area.
Community leaders have called for calm, urging youths to avoid retaliatory actions that could further escalate the crisis.
Meanwhile, the Bayelsa State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Musa Mohammed, confirmed the incident, stating that an investigation has begun and that one suspect has already been arrested in connection with the k+lling.AC
