Muhammadu Sanusi II, Former Emir of Kano, has secured the release of 59 inmates with minor offenses from Kano state prisons.

Mujitaba Abba, the foundation’s coordinator, told reporters on Wednesday that the former emir granted permission to secure the release of the 59 people in exchange for N16, 820,370 in fines and restitution.

He stated that the emir paid the fines of 26 inmates totaling N4,466,500 at the Kurmawa correctional facility, while 33 inmates were released after their fines totaling N11,380,770 were paid at the Goron Dutse facility.

“We discovered that many of the inmates are there for debts and other minor issues.”

“The majority of the cases are civil,” he explained.
“As a result, his royal highness has settled the restitution and fines totaling N16, 820,370.”

Some of the inmates, according to Abba, were “victims of circumstance,” while others had committed the crimes.
