Former Anambra State Governor and 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has reaffirmed his commitment to public service and prudent use of resources, revealing that he once turned down a ₦120 million house offer and urged the funds be used for education instead.
In a statement on Sunday to mark his 64th birthday, Obi expressed concern over the worsening hardship in Nigeria, urging leaders to prioritise investments in healthcare and education rather than self-celebration and personal gain.
“As I turned 64, I find it difficult to celebrate when so many Nigerians are suffering,” he said. “That’s why I have again asked well-wishers to direct their gestures towards helping the poor or supporting vital public institutions.”
Obi noted that he has consistently discouraged extravagant celebrations in his honour. He recalled an offer from an institution to build a house for him in his hometown. Upon learning that the project would cost ₦120 million, he asked that the money be used instead to construct classrooms in three schools located in Agulu, Ekwulobia, and Abatete, a request that was fulfilled.
He also cited an instance where a group planned to spend ₦20 million on a party for him, but he asked them to use the funds to buy desktop computers for schools. The group ended up donating 200 computers to schools across the state. Similarly, another group redirected their celebration budget to donate buses to institutions in need, including one to the Old Rangers Association.
Obi concluded by calling for a renewed national conscience among public officials: “I prayed for Nigeria, that God may touch the hearts of our leaders to understand that public funds are for public good. May we all work towards building a just, compassionate, and equitable society.”
