Nigerian Doctors Threaten Nationwide Strike as Ultimatum Nears Deadline

The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) has issued a stern warning that doctors across the country may embark on a nationwide strike starting Thursday, July 24, if the Federal Government fails to meet its demands before the expiration of a 21-day ultimatum on Wednesday, July 23.

Speaking in an exclusive interview on Sunday, NMA President, Professor Bala Audu, said the association was fully prepared to shut down medical services nationwide if urgent steps are not taken. He stressed that the unresolved issues are critical to the survival of Nigeria’s healthcare system and the wellbeing of medical professionals.

The ultimatum, issued on July 2, was triggered by a controversial circular from the National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission (NSIWC), which proposed revised allowances for medical and dental officers. The NMA rejected the circular, describing it as a violation of prior agreements and demanding its immediate withdrawal.

“We’ve been clear with our position,” said Prof Audu. “If the government does not address our concerns by July 23, we may have no choice but to initiate strike action.”

He added that the new provisions in the circular were not mutually agreed upon and significantly undermine doctors’ welfare.

“The circular was imposed without consultation. We reject it completely,” he said.

Prof Audu confirmed that the NMA had already engaged with senior government officials, including the Coordinating Minister of Health, Prof Muhammad Pate, and the Minister of State for Health, Dr Iziaq Salako. A follow-up meeting was planned for last week but was postponed due to the death of former President Muhammadu Buhari.

“We expect another round of talks with the NSIWC, Finance Ministry, and Health Ministry before the deadline. But if that doesn’t happen, and nothing changes, we’ll proceed with our plans,” he warned.
