Declares Interest to Host First F1 Grand Prix in Africa Since 1993
Nigeria has officially expressed interest in hosting a Formula 1 Grand Prix, which would make it the first African country to do so in over three decades.
Chairman of the National Sports Commission (NSC), Shehu Dikko, announced the move and confirmed that Opus Racing Promotions has been appointed as the official representative for Nigeria’s F1 bid, with plans to host the race in Abuja.
As part of the effort, Dikko has extended invitations to F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali, seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton, and Tilke Engineers & Architects the globally renowned circuit designers to visit Nigeria and engage with key government and private sector stakeholders.
“Our goal is to bring Formula 1 to Nigeria as soon as possible, not just as a sporting event, but as a strategic tool for boosting tourism, infrastructure, youth development, the economy, and Nigeria’s global image,” Dikko said.
He added that a successful bid would not only raise national pride but also attract private investment, create jobs, and promote sports as a significant contributor to GDP growth and national unity.
If approved, Nigeria would become the first African host of an F1 race since South Africa last held one in 1993. However, other African nations, including South Africa and Rwanda, are also actively pursuing the opportunity to host future races.
Formula 1 events are typically held on purpose-built tracks or a mix of city streets and specially designed circuits.
