Four Rescued, Several Trapped as 3-Storey Building Under Construction Collapses in Yaba

A three-storey building under construction collapsed on Friday night, September 12, 2025, at 333 Borno Street, Alagomeji, Yaba, Lagos, leaving several people trapped, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has confirmed.

The incident, which occurred around 8:30 p.m., drew a swift response from emergency teams. According to NEMA, eyewitnesses gave conflicting reports, with some saying six people were trapped and others five.

So far, four adult males have been rescued alive and taken to hospital for treatment.

Rescue teams from NEMA, the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, and other first responders have been working through the night to locate additional victims. Officials noted that the exact number of those still trapped remains uncertain.

Authorities have cordoned off the site to secure the area and ensure smooth rescue operations, stressing that every effort will be made to save more lives.

Building collapses are a recurring tragedy in Lagos and other Nigerian cities, often blamed on p++r construction practices, substandard materials, and weak regulatory oversight. Data from government agencies and civil society groups show that dozens of such incidents occur annually, leading to fatalities, injuries, and displacement.

Despite repeated warnings and enforcement actions by the Lagos State government against unsafe building practices, the problem persists, with several structures previously sealed for non-compliance.
