Former Niger Delta militant leader, Asari Dokubo, has condemned the heated clash between FCT Minister Nyesom Wike and military officers over a disputed Abuja property.
The standoff involved Naval Officer A.M. Yerima, reportedly acting on orders from former Chief of Naval Staff Awal Gambo, who blocked Wike and FCT officials from accessing Plot 1946, Gaduwa District.
Dokubo, speaking on Facebook, said the officer should face reprimand and court-martial. “I’m not siding with Wike, I’m siding with the law. In any sane society, that person would have been detained and disciplined,” he said.
He added, “The minister, constitutionally the chief security officer of Abuja after the president, had every right to be there. No one, including a military officer, is above the law. If Wike hadn’t gone, people would claim government officials are negligent.”
In his statement, Wike condemned the act as lawless. “I instructed FCTA officials to halt any illegal development. When I learned the military had intervened, I came to assess the situation myself,” he said. He accused both soldiers and developers of land grabbing and vowed not to be intimidated.
Constitutional law expert, Prof. Sebastine Hon, supported Wike, noting that military officers are not obliged to obey illegal or manifestly unjust orders, citing Supreme Court rulings that reinforce this principle.
However, a coalition of Nigerian military veterans criticized Wike for verbally insulting the officer during the confrontation.
