New research from Oxford suggests that male mast¥rbation may have a biological benefit by flushing out damaged, stored sperm.
Unlike women, who are born with a fixed number of eggs that age over time, men produce sp£rm continuously from puberty. However, sperm stored in the reproductive tract before ejaculation can deteriorate in quality.
The study analyzed data from 115 published studies involving nearly 55,000 men. It found that prolonged abstinence reduces sp£rm motility and viability, and increases DNA damage.
The main causes are oxidative stress, which physically harms sp£rm, and energy depletion, as sp£rm run out of fuel over time.Current World Health Organization guidelines recommend abstaining for two to seven days before providing a sperm sample for fertility treatments.
