President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has attributed Nigeria’s persistent electricity challenges to what he described as the “terrible privatization” of the power sector by past leaders.
The President made the remark while addressing stakeholders, stating that the current difficulties in electricity supply are largely rooted in structural problems created during the privatization process of the sector.
Tinubu said Nigerians should direct their concerns to those who handled the privatization, noting that foundational flaws in the system have continued to hinder effective power generation and distribution across the country.
Nigeria’s electricity sector was privatized over a decade ago, leading to the emergence of generation and distribution companies, but the industry has since struggled with issues such as inadequate infrastructure, poor investment, and recurring grid failures.
The President’s comments come amid ongoing public frustration over unstable power supply and rising electricity tariffs, with calls for reforms intensifying across various sectors of the economy.
Analysts have long argued that inconsistencies in policy implementation, weak regulatory enforcement, and funding gaps have contributed to the sector’s underperformance, despite repeated reform efforts.
