The Rivers State Police Command has dismissed three officers linked to the k+lling of 22-year-old University of Port Harcourt graduate, Anthony Obodo, in Port Harcourt.
Obodo was sh%t de@d on August 27, 2026, at the Agip-Ada George Junction in Port Harcourt. The incident sparked protests as youths and community members demanded justice and accountability.
According to witnesses and members of Obodo’s family, police officers flagged down his vehicle and allegedly opened fire after pursuing him when he failed to stop immediately. The police, however, said a scuffle and altercation occurred before the fatal sh%t was fired. Two passers-by were also reportedly inj¥red.
Following an investigation into the incident, Rivers State Commissioner of Police, Olugbenga Adepoju, announced on Wednesday that three officers had been dismissed after being found culpable.
“The officers being paraded today have been dismissed from the Nigeria Police Force and will be charged to court,” Adepoju said.
The Commissioner added that the dismissed officers would face criminal prosecution over their alleged roles in the incident.
Meanwhile, an Inspector who allegedly fled the scene after the sh%%ting has been declared a deserter by the command. Further action is expected against the officer.
The k+lling led to demonstrations across parts of Port Harcourt, with protesters blocking Agip Road and sections of the East-West Road around Ada George. Family members and protesters called for a transparent investigation and swift prosecution of those responsible.
The police command has yet to disclose the specific charges against the dismissed officers or the date of their arraignment.
