A growing internal battle is unfolding within the All Progressives Congress as tensions escalate between recently defected governors aligned with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and long-standing party loyalists across several states.
Party insiders say the crisis is being driven by a struggle for control of party structures and candidate selection ahead of the 2027 general elections. New entrants are reportedly moving to install loyalists as state executives while pushing for influence over party tickets.

This has triggered resistance from the old guard, who say they are being sidelined despite years of building the party.
In Akwa Ibom, one APC chieftain described the situation clearly:
“We have two blocs in APC… the old bloc… and the new bloc.” He added that there were claims that defectors could be handed “automatic tickets,” warning that “if this happens there will be serious crisis in the state.”
Across Delta, Rivers, Plateau, Bayelsa and Enugu, similar tensions are playing out. Insiders report parallel meetings, disputes over leadership roles and growing mistrust as both blocs battle for control.

Sources also indicate that the struggle is creating uncertainty for the defected governors themselves, as resistance from entrenched party structures could affect their chances of securing party tickets.
Within the party’s national leadership, consultations are ongoing to manage the situation and prevent escalation. However, insiders warn the crisis is deepening as competing interests collide.
With preparations for 2027 already underway, the outcome of this internal struggle is expected to shape not only party unity but also who ultimately secures APC tickets across key states
