You Have One Little Office In Abuja and You Pay 153m By One-Room; We’ve Evidence-Kalu Blasts SEDC MD As reported in a video by AIT News on Tuesday, June 9, 2026, the Senate Committee overseeing the South East Development Commission (SEDC), led by Senator Orji Uzor Kalu, has expressed worries regarding the commission’s handling of finances and spending. During the meeting, Senator Kalu inquired of the Managing Director and CEO of the commission, Mark Okoye, about the amount of funds received by the organization. “You have received 16.6 billion naira. What is the remaining balance in your account?” Kalu questioned. Reminding the SEDC leader that he was under oath, the committee chair sought a specific number. “What is the current balance in the bank?” he asked further. In his reply, Okoye indicated that the information at his disposal suggested that the commission still held a significant amount of the funds. “May I respond? I can answer, Mr. Chairman. From what I last checked and the last report provided to me, the SEDC should have between 11.5 to 12 billion in its account,” he replied. Nonetheless, Senator Kalu challenged that figure, mentioning that the data accessible to the committee revealed a different total. “You have 13.7 billion as of today. No, this is current information, I am communicating with the Central Bank. We are in session,” Kalu remarked. The previous governor of Abia State informed the management of the commission that the committee could view financial documents and would verify all expenses via proper oversight methods. “I can retrieve the documents from my office right now. We have also sent the Auditor General. We will audit all activities you have undertaken,” he asserted. Kalu expressed his unhappiness with the report received from the commission, labeling some of the papers as vague and insufficient.
